 In order to address the needs of various industries in a meaningful way, we are proposing a varied and far-reaching research program organized according to the following four Themes:

Theme 1 Biomaterials

Objective: To develop processes and formulations that will result in next generation, high performance bio-based materials

Project A: Novel High Performance Heterophase Bioplastic Blends

Project B: Bio-based Reinforcements/Nanoinclusions in Heterophase Bioplastics

Project C: Functionalized Biodegradable Polymer Scaffolds of Highly Controlled Porosity for Tissue Engineering Applications

Project D: Development of Porous Membranes from Chitosan using Electrospinning for Potable Water Treatment

 

Theme 2 Lightweight Hybrid Composite Materials

Theme Leader: Mohini Sain

Network Researchers: Carreau, Dalai, Favis, Hubert, Mohanty, Park

Objective: To develop Industrial technologies that will permit the innovative and cost-effective manufacturing of lightweight, hybrid composite materials for high-value applications

Project A: Glass and Carbon Fibre/Cellulose Fibre Hybrid Composites for Recyclable Applications

Project B: Manufacturing of Nanocellulose-Based Electronic Devices and Sensors

Project C: Carbon Fibre and High Strength Polyethylene Fibre Lightweight Composite Design and Manufacturing

 

Theme 3 Micro- and Nano-Structured Polymeric Materials

Theme Leader and Co-Leader: Musa Kamal and Pierre J. Carreau

Network Researchers: Ajji, Bates, Derdouri, Diraddo, Heuzey, Maric, Sundararaj, Sain

Objective: To develop nano-structured polymeric nanocomposites, micro-processing of polymers, micro-porous polymer membranes, guided by state of the art characterization technologies. Project A: Development and Manufacture of Novel Polymeric Nanocomposites Based on Thermoplastic Matrices (e.g., Polypropylene and Polylactide) and Nanocrystalline Cellulose (NCC).

Project B: Development and Manufacture of Novel Metal Nanowire Polymer Nanocomposites

Project C: Microprocessing of Plastics: Microinjection and Microblow Moulding to Produce Novel Products

Project D: Joining of Micro- and Nanostructured Plastics Products

Project E: Development and Manufacture of Microporous Polymer Membranes by Controlling the Crystalline Morphology for Two Different Novel Applications

 

Theme 4 Microcellular Foams

Theme Leader: Chul Park

Objective: To develop industrial technologies that will permit the innovative and cost-effective manufacturing of lightweight, microcellular foams with superior propoerties
